Avast anti-virus is great front line protection. Adblock plus, Adblock latitude Ghostery, on and on are all good ad blockers and as a final defense, NoScript will kill a lot of malware and other scripts before they even get a start. Also, as archaic as it is and until something better comes along, Flashblock for killing annoying and often malware laden Flash ads and HTML5 ads.
