The problem with most knife attacks in reality is that you don’t see the knife until it is too late. Generally speaking, if the bad guy flashes the knife at distance, it is with the intent to scare you into doing what he wants; handing over your money or whatever. In such instances, it is unlikely that you will be stabbed as long as you act correctly. Be that defensively or not, depending on the situation.

If the bad guys main intent is stabbing you for whatever reason, then they will usually conceal the knife, for example by holding their hand down by their side and slightly to the rear so you can’t see what they are holding, and appear to not be a threat until they are so close that it is too late...
