Winston Smith is of course the hero/main character of Orwell's classic dystopian novel '1984.' In his first act of defiance, he braves the merciless thought police all for the basic freedom to write "2+2=4" in his diary. I'd like to think that I had his courage to speak and write the truth, regardless of the consequences: Our inalienable civil rights are endowed upon us by our creator, that is precisely why they are inalienable. They are natural law. They do not come from the government and are merely codified by the Constitution. We as American citizens, like the fictional Winston Smith, must have the moral courage and intestinal fortitude to defend that fundamental human truth.
