Turns out Mossberg sells one for 8 or 9hundred. At least looks like a shotgun. The old witness protection grip on the one in the thread looked ok. Turns out a 2010 atf letter is letting this happen. My only thing was 26 in for rifled bore and 28 in.for smooth bore. AKfiles thread on it.

ATF may have approved it, but I bet the FBI, DHSS, and all the local waffen SS types will be clueless leaving owners in that dreaded "Finicum" zone if stopped.

It was never manufactured with a stock and longer than 26". The 'stock' you see is only a brace. It's not a short barreled shotgun. It's not a pistol. The forward grip is necessary to action the gun. It fits in no category but simply firearm. That's how they got it approved. The first time someone get's blasted by one, the BATF will create a restriction for it. For now, it's legal. They did a very nice job of skirting the rules.

Check state law before buying - some states will still consider it a sawed off shotgun even if the ATF does not. Better safe than sorry.

ATF probably allows it because it has a "bespoked barrel clamp".
I've only heard the word "bespoked" used for custom made suits and shirts. I guess now it's used for short barrel shotguns.
