Ammo was not delivered in big loads to Southern troops their was scrambling for that also. I would guess the rifled barrels would be desired but if you just have your bare hands hell that smooth bore starts looking good.
Both sides used buck and ball in their smooth bores for devastating results on the receiving end.

Yes sir bacterial infection did not exist. Gettysburg has a reenactment of the hospitals at the time. Holy sheet it was one saw to the next guy germs beware.
Plus on my God the weapons of the time tossed like all kinds of crap at the opposing forces. Nails, bolts, metal whatever the hell they could load.
Watch Histories Mysteries about the fence 'Wheat Field Pickets charge' at Gettysburg. Southern troops did not want to raise up and be shot understandably.
This caused a backlog of troops.

Lost an arm or leg? True, cut it off, throw it out the window (why the cutting was done in the second or third story rooms, the pile of arms/legs/bodies got too high to use lower floors). The Davenport Hospital was considered one of the worst hospitals in the country during the War of Northern Aggression, at a time where the average hospital was a death sentence.

The average 1860s quake knew less than the Romans did! Actually you would have been better off WITH the Romans! Romans kept the sick away from the wounded, "here", not until after WWI! The Romans did transfusions, had needles to shoot you up (well they looked like they would put a big hole in you, but...), the Romans did plastic surgery, etc.

During the WONA, they hacked off whatever had a bullet wound, better not get a head wound! Hack off a leg, "NEXT!", NO washing anything between people, meaning infections, NO WASHING ever for that matter! Go from cutting up a body left in the sun for a few weeks to birthing a baby (why pregnancy was so often fatal), to cutting out an appendix! "NEXT!"

The doc that wanted the quakes to wash their hands was put in a nut house and beaten to death by the guard who were paid to shut him up!

Doctors/hospitals are STILL a leading cause of death in the US, well ahead of guns!

The major problem with the .58 caliber Minie balls of the mid 19th century were that they did not clip bone the way a high velocity modern jacketed bullet does. Instead they just shattered the entire bone leaving no possible way to repair it. And the the other problem being that the single ball was not the only projectile in flight. Unless you were marching/standing in the first rank of a battle formation, every ball that hit you had probably already gone through someone else. Which meant it had their blood, uniform, sweat, bile, etc on it when it penetrated you and simultaneously contaminated your wound channel. Sepsis was a forgone conclusion.
