Opinions please
I have a Lee Enfield No4 Mk1. I got it for $60 from a neighbor. A descent gun as far as the barrel, light frost, and sharp rifling lands. Wood had the normal amount of dings for a Lee. There was very little of the original finish left on the metal, an some light rust. The Britts used what they called "Stoveing" (sic). Found out that , it may be available, but not to an individual. (very toxic stuff) I had a can of 1500 deg paint from doing some AKs. Painted the Enfield. Anyway, fired about 100 rounds, through it. No problems, no sign of ware in the bolt slide area ( paint). Rifle looks 1000% better, in my opinion, and have less worries about rusting,in humid Florida. Thought being I could strip it, and do a Guncote finish, when I have a proper setup.
Here's the opinion wanted, I've been accused of do a bubba job by another forum (a Lee forum.) I maintained that at least I didn't Sporterize it. Babba or Not? |

Don't worry about it. Everybody has their own opinions on how a gun should be retained or restored. A $60 Enfield isn't a museum piece or even a semi-rare firearm. Fix it up the way you want it, and have fun with it.

Not really worried about it, just irritated. Supprized , at how well the 1500 deg duplicolor is holding up. Will see how it is after about 1000 rds. That will be a long while though. Will try to get picture of it.

Bubba job or not, it's yours, your money, and you can do whatever you want with it. Even if you decided to drag it behind your car/truck to make a battlefield pick-up, you could...

In the later part of the war the Brits did use paint. I wouldn't call it a bubba job. Like Pogo said, it's your rifle, you paid for it, do what ever you want.

I love the Enfields and have a small family of them. Almost all the later WWII mfg. were painted. Paint is a perfectly satisfactory finish, especially on a military weapon, just not traditional on a sporter. The paint you used is probably far superior and more durable than what was originally used. You'll notice they don't Blue or Parkerize the Golden Gate Bridge,... they paint it! Bubba? ... Hell No! (Not unles you're going to add a sure-fire light, a bipod, a Laser sight , a folding stock, and paint the whole thing in some star Wars Cammo colors, then plug in a 200 round magazine. and cut the barrel down to 16 1/2 inches and add a Flash hider and muzzle brake. That would be "Bubba") |

While I will be the first to say that I am strongly opposed to people messing with military weapons. Whether it is sporterizing, or refinishing, I will also say, that the weapon is yours, not mine, and that you have the right, and freedom to do as you please with your property. Until Hilly, or McInsane get their way, you still have some freedoms here in the USA, so finish it as you please.

I once used BBQ paint on a SAR-1 that had a horrible finish then baked it years back.Bad mistake as anytime Id clean the rifle that crap would come off and turn into gunk.Should have sent the damn thing to SalBo instead.Learned a good lesson.
Its your rifle to do with what you like.I wouldnt ruin a quality C&R Id leave it as is but there are plenty of beat up rifles and pistols out there that can use some TLC.I have a couple of beat up KAR98ks that I refuse to touch due to the historical aspect to them. Regards,
