Something about optics, all optics contain compromises. Those of us that do amateur astronomy pick and choose our optics for what suits our preferences best, tolerating the downsides that come with our choice.

In light of that, a great test of optics is to look at dim stars on a clear night.

Does it focus sharply?
Is the star still in focus off center?
Does the star elongate near the edge of the field of view?
Is the star brighter or dimmer than with the naked eye?
How does this scope compare with others you own?

That last one is interesting, as you may find that your Tasco $299 Super Sniper 10X scope outperforms your $1,900 3x-24x zoom scope. And that the ACOG, with it's limitations, is still water clear.

Tasco used to be out of Miami Florida. So years back I picked one up for a .22 and gave it a try. Holy sheeeet I loved that scope. Crystal clear easy adjust banged it around still held center. They were inexpensive sleepers.
Well one of the big boys spotted what I did and bought the company.

With regard to the ACOG, I disagree. I have old eyes, can't use iron sights, need to fiddle with focus settings on zoom scopes if zoomed near or far, and need good eye relief for rapid use.

I also like the 3x or 4x magnification as I can use it with both eyes open. Since I'm right handed and left eye dominate, the ACOG makes this possible.

Bottom line, I need optics to be accurate. The ACOG works well for me.

I still have a Tasco red dot on my Ruger Mk II 22/45 that I used for Bullseye Postal matches. It's made in Japan, and still works fine. I took it out the other day, and the battery is still good after 15 years or so.
