Welcome to the site where the owners and members have had it with playing "nice" and being "inclusive" and "tolerant" of points of view that are destroying the fabric of what made this country great. The members here are sick and tired of politicians of all parties lying, deceiving, stealing, and pretending they are doing it all for the good of the country while selling out to special interests who have the set goal of destroying this country. We have had enough of career politicians who use their office only for personal gain, and who refuse to listen to the people who put them in office. The membership is no longer part of the silent majority who play nice and get along while getting screwed by anyone with a loud voice and an agenda. We will no longer allow anyone to piss down our back and tell us it's raining. And we like guns too.

Ed's Red contains similar ingredients like ATF, lanolin, acetone, solvent, and kerosene.

I use wheel bearing grease to cover the surfaces of gun components under stocks on firearms largely kept in storage and rarely if ever fired. I prefer cosmoline though.

Some of that stuff may contain some sort of "detergents" to keep engines clean of carbon and I don't think I would trust it on a thousand dollar gun. I'm no chemist but I like to use things that were designed with a specific purpose in mind and hate to experiment on expensive items.

I've tried 99% of the home did concoctions and about 99% of them didn't do all the fantastic crap that was so heavily touted on the internet. Went back to tried and true commercial cleaners and lubricant/protectants and been happy since.

My "arsenal" of lubricants and cleaners:

Hoppe's #9 (makes good cologne, too)

Tetra grease on semi-auto pistols

Militec oil and grease on AR's - grease on M-14, since I ran out of surplus Lubriplate pots.

Silver Bullet gun oil - made with 13% hog fat - also used on AR's and FAL.

I know some folks who swear by Mobil 1, and won't use anything else.

Thumbs up

Thanks, I was wondering about detergents' effects on gun metal as opposed to car metal. Probably best to leave the car products in the garage.

I do use clear ammonia for the bore, chamber and bolt face on anything that gets corrosive ammo before the Hoppe's #9.

Why? I mainly shoot corrosive primed ammunition and just use either plain hot water then Hoppes No.9 or just Hoppes No.9 and never ever have a problem. Straight ammonia can do more damage than good.

I use Mil-Comm TW-25B synthetic lube on all internals of my "active" shooters. It was the recommended lube by TNW for their semiauto MG34's. Super slick and a little dab goes a long way. Good thing because it's very expensive.

I think I'd use mineral spirits(mostly hydrocarbons) before ammonia (NH3)....meaning 3 atoms of Hydrogen and one Nitrogen....I'll leave that for fertilizers.

Exclamation

Didn't know that about ammonia. Guess I'll switch to mineral spirits or hot water. Used to use boiled water to remove cosmoline from metal parts. Been a while since I could buy new, preservation is the focus now until the jihad comes to town.

A lot of guys use Windex, too. The ammonia is not quite as concentrated.

Break-Free CLP, and Ballistol inside the gun. Flitz Metal Polish for the bores. FrogLube CLP on the outside of the gun.
