A really dumb AK fcg question..
I have never before used the pivot pin retainer that comes with the kit. I always just buy the shepherds crook retainers from DPH. Well I was doing some final fitting last night, and I was out of those. Thats when I realized I dont even know how to use the other one. It doesnt look much different, except for the wound spring on one end. Is the safety selector pin supposed to go through that(or maybe the trigger pin, I dont have it in front of me right now)? I hate when I feel like I should really already know this, and for some reason I dont.. Makes me feel like I'm back in math class

If your're talking about the wound spring end on the original FCG ,just cut the spring off or use some e-clips from ace the size is 7/32 they work well !!

i bought one of the retainers from a well known supplier and just copied them.
the old rear reciever stubs work well for stock material. or you can just grab some standard stock and heat treat it. |

I use 7/32 e-clips like Cephus suggested. I use two per axis pin, and they don't go anywhere! However, it is a bitch getting them off, if you need to remove the FCG. If you do go that route, look for them at an industrial fastener supplier, instead of Lowes or Home Depot. I used to get them at Lowes for about $1.50 for two, then I discovered a fastener supplier within about two miles from my house that sells them for $5 per 100.

There's nothing wrong with the ones from Lowes, they're just expensive as all get out!!!

Shepards hook
I came across this one good info.
On Gunco.net Firearm Library. Hit shepards hook. 7.62x39 has a great tutorial explaining some other proper ways to use the shepards hook. |

Thx 4th, thats a good one. The ones I usually use are what they call the "chinese L hook" on there. When I posted this thread, it was because I didnt have any left and I needed one. Turns out that the piece I was trying to describe originally was the FA sear spring or something. Since I've never built an FA, or even fired one, I had no idea. Thought it was a retaining spring of some sort
