Default Marlin 336 Price?

On my list of guns to buy, there has been a classic lever action of some sort, in some common lever caliber. By chance I found one at a pawnshop today and I wanted to get some opinions on price and such.

It is a Marlin 336 in .30-30 and it has an unmarked scope on it. The have $169.00 on it. The bore looks shiny and appears to have no pitting or anything. The barrel and receiver have some wear on the exterioer, like it was handled and left to sit for a long time. The stock is pretty good, just the usual scratches like a hunting rifle would have. Exterior appearance doesnt bother me.

Is this a good price? Should I try to talk them down? Anything to look for? Thanks!

Oh yeah, that's a good price. If it is in at least a "good" condition, it is well worth that. And, try to talk them down if you can.

Thanks for the fast reply, Pogo. It struck me as a good deal. I don't see how I could go wrong, really, as long as the bore is good. They are selling ones in better condition or with nicer scopes for about $269. I don't need a beauty queen, and I already have a deer rifle with a decent scope. This is a toy and possibly a project.

Got it for 159, so not much of a discount. I think it still seems like a good price though. Pics to follow...

Hey, you still got yourself a fine lever gun for the price you paid. Yeah, post a picture of it.

Take it and run.

At that price, they may come looking for you.

Excellent buy!

I've always preferred the Winniess for carrying and the Marlins for shooting.

Someplace I've got a reference of serial numbers to manufacturing date, if you ever get curious about how old it is.

Most people don't know that the Marlin were always considered a step up from Winchester. And priced accordingly.

There were more of them in the "old west" than Hollywood would have you believe.

Ya did GOOD!

Regards,

Why I like the Marlin over the (original) Winchesters: side eject and fewer moving parts.

The Marlin is a better shooter and that's a fact. If not for the lever hinge in front of the trigger guard it would carry as well as the Winchester too. No biggie either fit just fine in a saddle scabbard. If you ever get a chance to watch an episode of "The big Vally" they all carried Marlins. $159 is a good deal.
