Let's face it. Whichever gun gets the job done in your hands is the better weapon.

Them history channel shows are for the most part hogwash.Ask the soldier in the field not the armchair generals,I catch those history channel college historians on that channel in so many mistakes its not funny.Never had one ever fail on me when it was needed the most.

"Which is best?"
"The AK 47 or the M-16?" And then it just goes round and round and round. :pokinit Your mind is your primary weapon and most people are born disarmed. Shell fragments and schrapnel from bombs, grenades, morter bombs, claymores,IED's,boobytraps etc are the #1 combat killer,NOT aimed riflefire. This is because MOST all soldiers in combat are not masters of their weapon, the enemy has a desturbing tendency to seek cover to avoid being killed and bullets make very small holes through the air.

For clearing buildings our troops should be using riot shotguns anyway. When you want the job done up close and personal, there ain't nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing like a 12 gauge with buck shot.

I think in an SHTF situation where you may not have the opportunity to clean your weapon very often, the AK would be the better choice.
If I had a supply train of support materials to make sure the thing kept running, the AR is more accurate/more ergonomic. I'm not sure about killing power. Suffice it to say I think shot placement is more important than size of round. I'm uncomfortable with the lack of accuracy in the Chicom AK's I used to own. I think the better made European AK's are more accurate. |

Not being a smart ass, but I thought everyone knew that. It's been at least 50 years since someone said " The Primary objective of the individual soldier in modern warfare is to hide from Artillery and Aerial Bombardment while avoiding mortar fire, hand grenades and land mines." I don't recall who said it, probably some General Officer, but it sounded about right then and still does I think. What was the figure for VN, something like 2,000 rounds of small arms ammo fired per enemy casualty from small arms fire? Something like that, might have been 20,000 instead, all I remember was that the number was truly mind boggling. Regards, |

I'm just going to relate what I've actually witnessed: in 3-gun and assault rifle matches I've watched so many AR's jam to the point that they were unusable the rest of the day that I would never spend another dime of MY money to own one. I have NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER NEVER EVER seen an AK jam unless it was because of one of those polyurethane buffers causing the gun to short-recoil, or a Romanian on Sellier & Bellot ammo failing to extract because of the ammo's thicker rim. I've seen AR's jam under all kinds of conditions with all kinds of ammo in all states of cleanliness or lack thereof. I have NEVER been to a match where at least one AR hasn't jammed. I've been around both AK's and AR's since 1992 and I've seen and shot thousands of rounds through both. Whether that relates to combat reliability or not, I can't say. |
