If you are going to hump it in for a camp out.
Rule #1: If you do not absolutely, positively need it, don't take it, it is just more weight to hump. Rule #2: Before going to bed, take off at least one, or two outside layers of clothing. In case you sweat while you sleep, you want at least one, or two layers that are not damp, to protect you from the morning/daytime cold. Rule #3: Have at least two pairs of boots. One on your feet, the other dry pair, in a waterproof bag, in your ruck. For every day you plan on spending in the outdoors, have at least two pair of cushion sole socks, so if your feet get damp, you can swap out socks, if not boots as well. Store your fresh/dry socks in individual water proof bags, in your ruck. You might also wish to consider a pair of low boots for wearing just in your campsite, allowing your hiking boots to air out/dry out. You can make poles from tree limbs, and put your boots upside down on the poles near (not over, or in) the fire to take advantage of the warmth, and air convection to air out/dry out your boots. Socks can also be aired/dried in this same manner. Keep in mind, in extreme cold, you can go a day without food, 12 hours without water. Nowhere without your feet. Hikers, and campers seem to forget the most important item they bring on any outing is their brain, the second most important is their feet. Without either one, you are screwed, without both, you are dead! Let me think on it some more, and I am sure I can remember more of the ECW rules, however the most important one, is Dor's suggestion above!

Warm weather, a hammock is nice.
When the temperature drops, I like a cot with an insulated mattress and either blankets or a sleeping bag. My wife likes both sleeping bag and blankets. And of course a soft rug to step out on in the morning. Camping is enjoyable if you go prepared.

The weather is starting to get cold around here, so the plans for the winter outing are starting to begin.
I have my tent, and the heater, my litters, ECW sleeping bag, and so on. All I need now is the cold weather chow. |
