Apocalypse Now was based on a real man. Capt. Petersen befriended the Montagnard's and he became their friend and leader. They were tough tribal peoples who did not get along with the Vietnamese peoples.
Most all fought on the side of the Americans and fight they did. The movie takes liberties for entertainment purposes or no one goes to see it. But he was a real man and the C.I.A. wanted him killed. He essentially with his troops did such a good job jealously from above made enemies for him.
Yes he had a real tiger as a pet.
