I've been looking for a good way to carry while wearing overalls, and wasn't too happy with any of them. The best way, for me, was shoulder holster. But, when you're working, it tends to flop down in the way. Then, I came across the chest pack. I'm not a huge fan of fanny packs, but can see the utility. Fanny pack carry isn't the "shoot-me-first" signal it used to be, but I don't care for the thing flopping around on my waist. The chest pouch? I don't know, but when I'm out hiking, hunting, or woodcutting, it doesn't really matter, because I'll open carry but the pistol on the hip gets in the way of other things. I would like to get one that isn't camo, and is a bit bigger to carry other things in as well. They make them, but they are also $70-$80. This keeps my piece out the way and clean, but easily accessible with the quick pull tab. I have a 4" bbl XD45 in mine, but a full size 1911 will also fit, but tight.
You also need (or will want) something to keep your pistol from flopping around inside the pack. I got a Maxpedition strap holster with velcro on the back that is made to stick to the velcro panel inside packs.
$20 for the pack from 5.11 (on clearance, so who knows what the stock is like before prices go up)

Anyway, it's just an alternative way to carry that works great for me and keeps my piece accessible and out of the way. You're mileage may vary.
