Flint and Steel Mentality

I do a lot of solo camping, backpacking and canoeing. One thing I don't do is start fires with flint and steel. I've done it before, just for fun many years ago. It seems the trick is to have the right material to burn. Cotton balls seemed to work best. With any fire, it pays to spend the extra time having various sizes of kindling ready to go.
I gotta have a fire, regardless of the temperature. Setting up a camp without a fire just isn't right. All meals have to be cooked over the fire. Propane stoves are cheating! )
