WTF Happened To The Gun Boards?

Gunsnet defunct, akfiles seems to be thriving, glocktalk is overmoderated and entertains a tranny(Emily E. Trott)when I inquired I got moderated, arfcom is a pay to play or its useless...Have we been infected/invaded with the liberal mind virus?

Myself I was over on Gunco not in the real early years then my bud Ptannjr told me to check out the DDB. I said uh huh that's where those wild guys went I gots to join. 😁
Building AKs? Yup I had to get into that. One stupid question after another. What the hell is 'Head Space' how do you do these rivets to look nice? dinky, Pogo, the Chineman, Carl, Kernel Krink, Ashhoe, etc... would answer if I asked nice. Started buying those $59.95 AK kits and a grand $$ ++ worth of tools and I was off.
AKs dried up and I stayed here. 😉

Gunsnet and Gunsboard were okay when the curio and relic imports were flowing dirt cheap. Fal files when building them was the boom. Never spent time at akfiles. I hung out at Gunco when building AKs and other conversions. I went where the expertise was depending on what I was building.

Most of my experience is with musician/drummer forums.

I've heard there's a company in Canada that's been buying various internet forums solely for advertising revenue. Once the purchase is complete, they pretty much leave things unchanged, but advertising increases dramatically. My favorite forum (drummerworld.com) was recently purchased. Advertising became so bad that I dropped it. Too bad. There were a lot of pro drummers on this forum who'd bend over backwards to answer questions even from beginners (or old guys who still can't do a decent double stroke roll)!

When a forum is purchased, everything's kept quiet. Previous owners go silent and disappear from the site as do some moderators.

Years ago, drum companies and suppliers used to host forums on their web sites. After a while, manufacturers discovered that forums don't bring sales or increase profits. They do just the opposite. It's the "curse" of free speech I suppose. You'd be on the Pearl drum forum and you'd hear from people who HATED Pearl drums. The other problem relating to free speech was moderation. Not every member agreed with moderator decisions. So whenever a moderator had to make a necessary correction, it would make somebody angry and drive them away from the very product the manufacturer wanted to sell.

I've been on the 1911 Forum, the M14 forum, Rifle Company Forum, FAL Forum, Gunco, and been banned from the old Arfcom.

Interests change, and plus, there are only so many ways to build something. Then, add some sketchy moderation and sponsors and you get a place free-thinking men don't want to be anymore. I know Brownell's bought out Arfcom, so that means that nobody will be allowed to post anything that is either critical of Brownell's or might cause people to not buy from them.

Plus, without a healthy general discussion/off topic section, most forums just wither away and die on the vine for taking themselves too seriously and preventing a sense of community and camaraderie.

I also don't tolerate commies, fags, and niqqers and will not be a part of any forum where they are tolerated, either.

A large number of us started out at Gunsnet can't remember the year now, they got greedy so we migrated to a new formed group; Gunco...eventually they got greedy too so this became home. I started a cheap free forum with Pogo and next we knew everybody was coming aboard so we went with a better software and server. Many folks have left, others have died. We're still here.

There are a lot more social media outlets today than back when Gunsnet started. They sort of had a captive audience back in the late 90's and early 2000's. Those were heady days when that place was the Wild West of gun boards. Lots of great info about milsurp hardware, AK building, and of course the epic Flame Wars between members who were into that particular virtual purse swinging. Lots of great and funny memories.

I was just a reader until Smegma said something good about communism....that triggered me. that was around 2001 I think. "The Wild West of Gun Boards", that's a good way of describing it.
