Sometimes it’s hard to tell what’s the force behind the decisions.

co-worker of mine. Only other guy doing same job as me (access coordinator for dot). He has been habitually coming in one or two minutes late, with an occasional 10 - 15 min late. He’s also been milking the OT by scheduling meetings that end at 3:00 when he knows it will take 2 hrs to drive back to the office.

Managment rode him, verbally and written reprimanded, and finally took him off the 4/10 schedule.

First day starting the 7-3:30 shift, came in at 7:01 today. Now I’m sitting here at 5 minutes from quitting time wondering if he’s got the balls to come in from the field late and claim some OT.

I see Oregon has an opening in that category. Maybe the axe will drop on him, but I doubt it. Or, are you retiring>

I’m probably going another 7 years to hit my 25 yr mark.

Him? He’s got 4 or 5 years on me, so maybe he’s trying to find out. Let them force him into retirement and then sue for racisim or ageism or being excessively heterosexual.

I left 2 minutes after, he wasn’t back yet. He’s giving them all the ammo they need, but it is the State. Will take years to get rid of him.

In theory we now work the same schedule, but I've always been one of those who thinks it's better to come in 15 minutes early. Something I learned a long time ago. When you always come in on the days you're scheduled, and you consistently show up 15 minutes early, on those rare occasions when something happens and you show up late no excuse is necessary. When you constantly run out of paid time off and you regularly come in a minute or two late, no excuse is good enough.

You're co-worker is stealing. He's doing everything in his power to purposefully take money that he did not earn.

Your habit of always arriving 15 minutes early is the mark of a professional and is one of many things that sets you apart from your co-worker. I'd say most of us on this forum are wired like you. I certainly am. Even though retired, if I'm supposed to be somewhere at noon, you can bet money that I'll be there early. There's nothing I hate more than being late.

It was jerks like that who compelled me to put in a time clock for them to punch. I fired a couple guys when I found they were clocking each other in or out, depending on the situation. Like they didn't think I'd notice Joe Schmoe coming in 30 minutes after I got in, but his time card showing he'd been there since 6 a.m.

State employees have to be written up several times before any action is taken. My wife has to deal with that. She's been an employee of a (State) college for 47 years, she retired once after 37 years and they called her back within six months. Somebody doesn't perform, HR won't let her get rid of them that easily...being the boss, she just moves them around until they quit.

After years of the honor system I too like Sanders had to get a time clock. I put in my office so the employees had to see me when they used it. I was there six days a week and on the rare occasion that I wasn't there my daughter was so fudging on their time was minimal.

Well, turns out he was over 30 minutes late clocking out yesterday. Today he made a big deal of coming in at 6:59.

I've been in that situation before: You can do a lot more than they're paying you for. You WANT to make a greater contribution but don't want to be someone's door mat.

In one job I offered to take over purchasing for no additional pay, as long as management promised to stay out of my way. They agreed.

In another job I just kept my mouth shut knowing full well the bureaucracy didn't like overachievers.

In the last job I was offered a huge increase in responsibility with no additional authority. I turned it down. Good move. The guy who ultimately took on the role was miserable.
