I'm glad that the military members are getting a bonus, they don't make enough money as it is.

The only bonus that I was offered while serving was a re-up bonus while being in a combat zone to stay in that combat zone for another year. I told them to keep their bonus and give me a ticket back to Flarda.

I was anxious to get the hell gone then when time came to leave I damn near stayed. Got home and I kind of missed the mountains but I got word the 4th was movin over to the east coast and it was hot as all hell over their. Got home and it was the same boring sheet. If I had a time machine I would go back in a heartbeat.

You're not alone. Even though military service is often dirty, difficult and thankless; most of us would jump at the chance to go back in time and serve just ONE day. I know I would. I was in for over 30 years, a combination of active, reserve and inactive reserve. The longer I was in, the more I enjoyed it and the better I got. I was one of those guys they had to force to retire.

I never really clicked in the civilian sector. Yeah... I had a modestly successful civilian career, but nowhere near like I did in the military. The military was in my blood and in the civilian sector, I was a fish out of water.

When I retired, I wanted to re-engage my military skills. I tried local politics and veterans organizations. Neither clicked with me. Sort of by accident, my wife and I began volunteering for our county sheriff department a couple years ago. We both love it.
