New Law Could Mean Increased Fines For Two-Wheel Drive Cars In Colorado

Heading to the mountains of Colorado this winter? If your car only has two-wheel drive, you have some extra work ahead. State transportation officials have put new traction and chain laws into effect along the I-70 corridor and other highways throughout the state. When CDOT activates the Traction and Chain Laws due to inclement weather, two-wheel drive cars traveling on those highways must have snow tires and a traction device.

The new statewide law was put in place earlier this year. It requires all cars traveling between Dotsero and Morrison from September through May to be all-wheel or four-wheel drive and to carry approved chains or traction devices. Two-wheel drive vehicles need both.
A new Colorado law is tightening winter driving enforcement, leaving certain vehicles more vulnerable to fines during storms on major routes.

Glad that I live in Flarda.

On Friday I drove 2-hours to a wake / viewing. It was the first "long" trip for my Dodge Ram. I drove in 4WD about 30% of the trip when the roads got real icy. Four wheel drive really makes a difference. However; I'm still getting used to an automatic transmission. I felt like I had more control over the vehicle with a manual transmission, a clutch, front wheel drive and snow tires. Old dog. New trick.

Good law I think it is a great idea. Hell I remember Loveland pass before the Eisenhower tunnel. Sitting for hours waiting for a stuck vehicle blocking the road to be moved. Pin heads were not like Johnny who was prepared and still had to drive cautiously. Even two wheel drive is fine if you have snow tires and chains. Front wheel drive and snow tires at a minimum.
The college kids used to get on both sides of the passes in Colorado one side putting chains on vehicles the other taking them off to at least get you over the high snow passes. They did well. $$.

ADD: 1980s Vermont I had a 4 WD GMC and a Dodge Omni front wheel drive. That little Dodge would take me through blizzards I beat the piss out of it and the little bugger kept going.

Where common sense fails another law is implemented.

VW Beetle one of the best in snow. Kind of funny watching them come up the hill with the snow dang near covering the little bug. You almost needed a periscope to see where the hell you was goin.

Except when the snow was deep...you would drive forward and the snow would pick the front end up so the tires would not be on the road. But yes the old VW's would go places right behind jeeps.

The only time it will ever be enforced is when some idiot spins out and causes a huge traffic backup in a pass somewhere. Even then, they may not even get cited for it.

I had a '65 VW beetle in HS I paid $450 for, used. I remember it did pretty well in the snow, I think that came from the engine being over the rear wheels.

Typical democrats. They only know how to do three things to make our life "better". Mandate it, ban it, tax it.
