New York parents say kids 'freeze' on mandated electric school buses

Parents in western New York are raising alarms over cold rides and breakdowns after officials mandated that all school bus purchases must be electric by 2027.

Local outlet WIVB reported that the law has drawn the ire of parents in the Lake Shore Central School District. The station received "several calls" over the electric buses, with parents claiming that their children are freezing when they come home from school.
"The heaters on the bus run off the same electricity as the bus itself," Scott Ziobro, a local parent, told WIVB. "They were told that it drains the battery capacity of the bus itself."

This news story was written based only upon "several" parental complaints. I'm no fan of electric vehicle mandates but when a news story hinges upon just a few phoned-in complaints, you can color me skeptical. Another red flag is the word "freezing". Are the kids really "freezing"? What's the actual temperature in the bus? I'm betting it's nowhere near a "freezing" temperature. It's probably 55 degrees F. The article avoids this key piece of information.

When I was in the 3rd grade I rode a school bus from Pocomoke City MD to Snowhill MD, about 20 miles. One snowy day the bus driver hit a deer about midway to school and disabled the bus. We waited about two hours for the LEOs to come looking for us. Then it took another couple of hours to get another bus there. Meanwhile all of us kids were having snowball fights, making snow angels and having a ball. I don't remember anyone whining about the cold. I also don't remember the bus being heated or cooled, we just dressed for the weather.

Joys op growing up in a small town that would be lucky to have a graduating class of 100 every school year. Think the town population was around 3k at the time.

Indianapolis bought a bunch of electric city busses. In the winter they have problems. They had to have additional busses to relive them when the batteries got low.

You're correct. I don't ever remember being "cold" as a kid. We were immune to snow, ice and cold. All we cared about was the beloved "snow day". School is closed! We're free!

The best "snow day" ever was when I was an adult, working for a soul-crushing publicly held company on a night shift. Wife quietly snuck into the room where I was sleeping and removed my alarm clocks. A couple hours later, she gently woke me and said "no work today. Snow day." I was so exhausted. It was the best snow day ever.

School bus?? That is frigging funny. We WALKED 3 miles to school in rain snow sleet and icy roads. Grammar school, junior high up to last few years of high school. WE WALKED. Slow moving delivery trucks we jumped on the back to get a ride. Last 2 yrs. of high school they finally got busses and we had over 3,000 kids in the school.
That was a suburb 'beach town' of New Haven, Conn.. I think the cities had busses??

Two feet of snow uphill it was. The next neighborhood we had to pass through we had to fight the kids their. They used to steal our damn homework not kidding it was ruff but we were tuff.

My house was 1/2 a mile from the nigger infested elementary school I went to, 1 mile to Junior High, and maybe 2 miles to High Skool. I never had to walk to high school, my parents or somebody else's took us to and from.
My brother rode the skool bus, which was just a mobile boxing ring most days. Nobody froze

I have never ridden a school bus. I walked the miles to and from school rain or shine, snowing, sunny or shit. I have no idea what the kids who did ride one did or did not experience. None at all. AND don't give a shit.

I don't recall the school buses ever having working heaters, anyway. And forget about air conditioning. The air conditioning was all the open windows in the 100+ degree Southern Arizona heat. Our bus ride was around 20 miles one way - not bussed, that's just how far away the closest schools were for us.
