I think Newsom is just playing the long game. No news is bad news as long as it’s pushing your name forward. People have very short memories, and on the ballot name recognition is key.

Right now people are hearing his name, seeing it on the headlines. Two years from now when Dems are voting on the primaries, how many of them will remember the inconsistencies of his claims, the times he clearly pandered to any demographic he was speaking to? They will be lucky just to recognize his name.
