A tree-trimming employee has been charged with manslaughter after allegedly crushing his coworker’s head with a hydraulic grapple while the pair were reportedly "f—ing around" on the job, according to Minnesota authorities.

The incident happened in Apple Valley on Thursday when Christopher Boone Crimmins, 34, was operating machinery on the back of a truck while his coworker, Tyler Anthony Lynch, 26, was on the ground cleaning up branches, according to a criminal complaint filed by Dakota County.

Years ago, I hired a tree service to clean up some complex storm damage. I saw lots of unsafe actions but kept my mouth shut figuring these guys are pros and do it every day. The straw that broke the camel's back was seeing a guy standing in the hopper of the wood chipper. I finally stepped in and told him "no".

Usually a small business with BIG signs on the side of the truck "LICENSED AND INSURED". Great but do they have 'workmen's compensation?" No? Most all small company's do not have it to expensive. If one of their employee's gets hurt on your property? The lawyers are going after your home owners ins.. Feel like gambling while they work on your trees?? $$$$$
A neighbor here had a good small tree business. One of his employees fell ending up loosing his leg and his first week in the hospital was over a hundred grand $$. He did not have workmen's comp. so they went after Mr. homeowner's ins. who I did not follow up on what happened. Licensed and insured? good ask to see paperwork. Hell most of them just have the insurance sticker and NOT a penny of insurance.

I don't know the ins and outs of liability insurance. Some years back, I bought an umbrella policy. Might be a waste of money, but on paper it's a way to cover all life's little uncertainties.

In my example.... If the worker had fallen into the wood chipper, I don't know how they could say it was my fault. Even so; when I saw the gross safety violation, I stepped in. I wasn't thinking about money. I was thinking about someone's life.
