Just completed my first Cowboy Action Shooting match - I see the appeal

OK, that's actually a lot of fun! It's not a contest of equipment, or at least not as much as PRS or 3 gun. 5 rounds in each of 2 single action revolvers, 10 rounds in a lever gun, and a 12 gauge coach gun. You can tune the guns, but all the tuning in the world won't help you if you fumble jamming 2 more shells in the shotgun. Plus you get to dress up like John Wayne while you shoot guns!

I took 2nd in my division (classic), which sounds impressive until you know that there were only 4 people in the classic division. 39 people in all, and my overall put me right about in the middle. Considering that classic division is the slowest (single hand shooting the revolver, no 2 hand grip, 1 gun at a time, and the shotgun must have exposed and functional hammers) and it was my first time, I'm happy.

Good man Gimpy good for you taking 2nd place. I watch that cowboy shooting when I am up late like now. Recent was Vegas matches so it must have been the big boys? Holy freaking sheet like the fast draw? I'm talkin splitting one second and hitting the target and then the pistol back in the freaking holster. They all had cool names and 'Zorro' won the match I watched. They lean way back so the pistol is already pointing downrange. Even slow motion its tough to see clearing the holster and the shot. Sammy Davis Jr. was one of the fastest of the Hollyweird crew I believe?

As Munden says the westerns we watch with the shoot out in the streets? Almost never ever happened. Guys shot each other in the back or just had a bar fight busting rounds till someone went down.

Bob Munden was a freak of nature. When you consider that part of the time had to account for the hammer falling it means that he had to cock in the holster, pull the trigger while coming out of the holster, acquire target as the trigger is falling, and then use the recoil to help accelerate it back into the holster. I read once that Bob estimated he practiced draw and fire around 10,000 times a year.

CAS was one of those things that I wanted to do years ago. Went to the local matches, spoke to competitors and others, but just never joined or went through with it, always thinking I'd do it later. Do kind of regret it now, as there are no more matches in my immediate area.

It's not easy to shoot yourself with a single action. Sounded like he was practicing "Double Duelist", a style where you hold one gun in each hand and alternate shots. If he got confused on the order, or lost count and assumed a gun was empty, that could have been a factor.

Second out of four ain't bad. I went on a fencing competition while in college against an Olympic team, I was 10th .......out of eleven people.

Just going to sleep here tired but that range is about 5 miles to my west here. I went to the range about a week after this man shot himself and spoke with the paramedic who worked on him. I will explain tomorrow. Good night.

O.k. back up just took a nap. The range their speaking about? I felt safer walking on the Ho Chi Minh Trail than I do going to that freaking range. It is about a 30 position 100 yd. unsupervised rifle range. Its every man for himself bring your helmet and a good vest. Maintained by our wonderful Nat. Forestry Service who I think were politically forced to set it up?
It gets good shooters who are safety conscious and rookies who saw a gun fired in Saving Private Ryan and fully understand now how its done. Get the picture? So just by chance I end up speaking with a paramedic who worked on the deceased guy. His words now the guy was showing his girlfriend how Wild Bill Hitchcock spun his gun before placing his pistols in his holster. Whoops not like that cowboy.
The range has had a number of W.I.A.s not sure on the K.I.A.s?? I stay clear of the place don't shoot a lot anymore and use private properties if I do want to shoot now.

Yea, twirling a loaded gun is a good way to off yourself. Still requires exceptional stupidity to do it with a single action.
