I hear you. My understanding is that europe is not handicapped friendly at all. "Stay home," is their motto for peglegs, etc.

I've seen people on rented scooters, granted, Europe is full of hills with steps on them. I walked down one in Capri where the steps are even angled down, not easy with poor stability.

Electric Scooter rental equipment service for wheelchair users traveling Italy we offer delivery to all major Italian touristic destinations

The wife and I have booked a trip to northwest Italia next summer. Going with another couple who have dual US-Italy citizenship that we've traveled with in the past. Italy is one of my favorite countries in Europe. The historic architecture, museums, cuisine and people make it a must-see. Never had anything but great times over there.

We want to visit the south, The only place we haven't been to in the north is the Lake Como area, my neighbor says it's beautiful. We haven't been south of Naples.

4th it's pasta not spaghetti and pizza, sure, it sells all over the place, just don't use a fork and knife, fold it and eat it with your hands. Don't buy water bottles either, their water fountains are great, clear healthy water.

Oh and if you are walking around and see a tiny window on a wall.....get 10 euros out, knock on it and say "Un bicchiere di vino bianco per favore" and you'll get a nice cool white wine glass. Return the glass when you're done. Some old Italian things.

We stayed at a great hotel in Stresa, right on Lake Maggiore three summers ago. It's in Northern Italy in the so-called Lakes Region. Also spent quite a bit of time boating on Lake Como, saw both the towns of Como and Bellagio. Great places to visit, all of them.
