    Your experience getting an MRI?

I got my first MRI yesterday evening. For me it was pleasant. I actually nodded off a few times! How was your experience?

The entire staff was extremely friendly and funny. In contrast, every single patient I saw looked pissed off. The female nurse who handled my MRI was hilarious. She made fun of me that I didn't know how to tie the gown correctly. As they were about to wheel me into machine, she placed an emergency squeeze activated switch in my hand. "Just squeeze this at any time if you have trouble." I replied "Great! Can I take it home?"

As for the experience in the MRI, it was a lot louder than I expected. It sounded like a large industrial press that was falling apart: heavy clunks, hammering, shrieks, and squeals. The nurse piped in some classic rock tunes, and that drowned out much of the noise. The space was very confined, and I could see how someone who is claustrophobic could have problems. I was completely comfortable, showed up kinda tired anyhow, so that helped to lay still and relax.

Afterward, the nurse told me a little about the process. She said it's very common for people to freak out in the MRI. That's one of the reasons they were able to move my appointment up an hour. Oftentimes, they have to sedate patients to even get them in the machine. The other problem is heavy people. She said they often have to call for multiple staff to physically shove patients into the machine inches at a time. That's got to be a miserable experience for both patients and staff.

Ten years ago had an open MRI on shoulders. Completely unremarkable. This summer had traditional one after the other same Bat Time, same Bat Channel right there on back, then on hips. Listened to classic rock. Was flat for the back one. Had my legs tied together and the table tipped head up at a steep angle for the hip one. They asked what I thought about the second one at the beginning. I said I believe in reincarnation and this wasn’t the first time I had my legs tied together and been slid down/into a tube. They thought I was kidding. So far that’s as close as I’ve come to being locked up…this time.

I have had 21 MRIs from 2018 - 2025 due to liver cancer. I told my Doc last year that I was done with MRIs so he reluctantly (because of radiation) switched me back to CT scans. I can't get comfortable in the tubes or even think about sleeping because of the noise and having to hold my breath fifty times when pictures are being taken. When the contrast dye is dumped into my arm it is a flash of cold that turns to heat that goes goes through my body from head to toe. It makes my butt hole feel like I'm getting ready to crap while in the machine to which I haven't done yet.

I have been to every MRI facility at the University of Florida Shands hospital campus which is 6. The first machine I was put in broke after 10 minutes and it was the only one available at the time. So I had to wait hours for the tech to repair it. Since then most of the machines have been replaced so they are more roomy. What really aggravates me is that the techs tell me that the imaging will only take 15 to 20 minutes. It has always taken at least 45 minutes to an hour or more to complete. I am slightly claustrophobic and the noise toward the end of the scan is deafening even with the headphones on and I feel on the verge of a flashback from the military.

Sooner or later I'll have to go back to MRI scans because of the radiation involved with CT scans. Since I've had 2 bouts with cancer being removed from my liver I will have to get these scans for the rest of my life if I want to stay on top of it.

Several head injuries so I’ve had a few🤣

Prefer open MRI’s by far, less claustrophobic and noisy.

Youngest has had 4 iirc, all sedated due to his age.
