ABC to settle Trump defamation lawsuit for $15 million

ABC News has agreed to pay $15 million toward Donald Trump’s presidential library to settle a defamation lawsuit over anchor George Stephanopoulos’ inaccurate on-air assertion that the president-elect had been found civilly liable for raping writer E. Jean Carroll.

As part of the settlement made public Saturday, ABC News posted an editor’s note to its website expressing regret over Stephanopoulos’ statements during a March 10 segment on his “This Week” program. The network will also pay $1 million in legal fees to the law firm of Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito.

I'm glad to see this. I've never understood how someone can fabricate an easily disproven lie, broadcast it to millions of people and then just walk away without any consequences. Even a public figure should be protected against this sort of slander.

Before the election, I heard lefties calling Trump a rapist. Now I know where it came from. Sadly, all these people screaming "rapist" will remain unconvinced. No amount of evidence can change their minds. They're 100% emotionally driven. As for Stephanopolis, he's a very intelligent and experienced guy. He knew exactly what he was doing. His motivations were purely evil. I sincerely hope his reputation is crushed by this ruling.

I've always been a "free speech" kind of guy. There are limits to our free speech, and I think making up an easily disproven rape story is one of those lines no one should ever cross. If a conservative did it, I'd feel the same. It's all about right and wrong; not politics.
