Was the chopper on somewhat of a right angle cutting into the commercial planes path and he had to turn his head a bit back and left? Or RTO maybe onto something that the BH pilot was looking at the plane about to take off?
Both the BH and the commercial are in 7 feet of water at 32 degs. last night upside down. Credit to the U.S. Navy divers to go into that 0 visibility water to feel for bodies. God bless them the police and the Coastie divers I don't think I could do it.
The divers are wearing dry suits. It keeps them relatively warm.

4th at night sometimes your eyes play tricks on you and things may appear to be closer or further away. Airplane was cleared to land, not his fault, it's one of the busiest times in the cockpit, chopper pilot came from behind, he was told to go behind the landing airplane, tower should have told him how close his traffic was and altitude. I didn't hear that in the recording. Controller has 50% responsibility and military pilot the other 50% for keeping his eyes in the cockpit and not outside looking for the traffic.
Sometimes I wish I had a Harry Potter's wand and make people go up into smoke.

News said it was a night vision exercise. In that area all lights would be intense. And night vision helments would severly restrict peripheral vision.

            (4) Washington, D.C., plane crash live updates: Army helicopter, commercial jet collide over Potomac River

Control tower kept asking them each if they could see each other?
I spent six months at Ft Belvoir in training. Ft Belvoir is not THAT close to Washington National AP. Across the river? MAYBE SO? I took many flights out of that airport on military standby to fly home on weekends. Then, it was @$12.50 each way IIRC. It was over 1/2 of a century ago. 😃

Also....the Washington National AP then....was an Art Deco masterpiece...which fascinated me. On one "standby flight," there was a layover from DC to Pittsburgh where we boarded a DC6...to CAK. My first and only flight on a prop driven airliner. The four engine, one by one, startup was a thrill. Way different than jets.

Waaaaay to much city lights etc for NODs. The aircrew might have had the attached to their flight helmets...? But...

Also the NODs in issue to flight crews is not the same as those I am familiar with. Other than those... have four tubes so that peripheral vision is also enhanced.

At night sitting in the hole waiting for Victor Charles to sneak in and put his finger in your eye we were taught to use peripheral vision. It really did work look off target a bit and you could see the sneaky little devils. Gen 1 night vision that was about useless.
Old story posted before. I heaved that junk about 20 foot to the next hole and when it hit? Those poor guys were screaming like little girls in a horror movie then started runnin. They thought it was a satchel charge. Me and my bud were laughing so hard we were crying. Never told them it was me they would have killed us. 🤣

Damn Tim, you gave those poor guys PTSD before they left country. I'll bet that their hair started turning gray that night.
