Now I get why I was confused. I remembered that SpaceX docked at the station, with the intent of giving those two a ride home. In my brain, I made the assumption that they took the ride. That's why I was confused when Elon announced that Trump had requested SpaceX go rescue them.

I've got to be honest. If I had been marooned on the space station for several months, with no clear path back to Earth, and another ship docks to the station, I'd be out. I'd be on the radio to NASA saying "Hey, it's me. Um, I resign. Fuck Biden and fuck you. See you back on Earth."
