Remember this, if a huge war kicks off it will be uncontrollable and China and probably NK will take the chance to go wild. We cannot fight China and Russia at our current defense level and we will have to because the Europeans cannot handle their own illegal migrations nor can they protect their borders. common sense and reason is dead and the war mongers win.

What is sad about the China threat is we can quickly pull their teeth by removing them from most favored nation trade status, bring our manufacturing home, stop giving them our computer technology, and end our relationship with Taiwan. We can move all chip manufacturing to the US , then Taiwan will be irrelevant and China can have it. We can beat China and neutralize them without firing a shot but the investment class will not allow it and it will cause short term pain to our economy but in the long term it is in our interest.

I retired from the US Army and am terribly biased toward military service. That said, I also understand the military isn't for everyone. When I was 17, I was already enlisted. My parents were more than happy to "sign me away". Dad served in the Army and one of his greatest career regrets was not staying till at least 20 years. I picked up the baton where he left off and served till 30.

If I were counseling your son, I'd recommend he look at another career path. It's not for him.

It was an excellent career path for me. I did very well. In the civilian sector, I always felt like a sort of fish out of water.

He should go firefighter all the way over corrections/patrol. As former LE, I've met very many fellow cops that honestly say "I should been a firefighter." I've never heard of a firefighter say "I should have been a cop."

If you have a local VFD (Volunteer Fire Department) he can join with them, and they'll provide much of his training for free. My youngest daughter did that and wound up a Lieutenant. But, they will burn out a good volunteer if he allows them to take advantage of his time. My daughter just finished her paramedic school. Every single place she did her hands-on clinicals has offered her a job, including the city fire department. She's also only 2 classes away from getting a Fire Science degree. She is finishing up with zero student loan debt, too.

Edit: The VFD doesn't even have to be close to you. He can drive out into the country to volunteer at one, if he's really interested. I've seen many people do that around here.
