Good question. Our elderly male Airedale terrier needs to go out about every 4 hours or so. I've been sleeping in the guest room so he doesn't wake up my wife. By the time I take him outside in the middle of the night and walk around with him, I'm wide awake. Now you guys have to deal with me!
It's not often a 61 year old guy gets called "young feller", but I'll take the comment and wear it as a badge of honor!

The shit we do for them....my diabetic 13 year old dog needs to be fed at 5 am and 5 pm with a corresponding insulin shot, but she starts waking me up before 4 am, I just walk out of the room and close the door so she won't wake my wife up. She'll do this soft bark noise like "Hey wake up, I'm hungry" and hit my side of the bed.

Dogs think we're nothing but trained, hairless monkeys whose only purpose is to serve them! Actually, there's some truth in that! 😂
Our elderly dog is also 13, senile and slow-moving. He started getting aggressive toward visitors, so nowadays he doesn't leave the property. Of all the dogs we've owned, (7 deceased and 3 current), he's been one of the healthiest, but the most difficult. Like all pets, he's our responsibility till he's gone. He's has been a much better watch dog than a pet. A professional dog trainer worked with him many years ago and said he had the perfect disposition as a police dog, but not a great pet. He was right.
He's not all bad. Years ago my wife surprised a black bear at a distance of only 15 feet. The dog jumped inbetween my wife and the bear with a ferocious growl. Wife managed to scare the bear away with an air horn. The dog, however; was ready to tangle. I remember that kinda stuff when it's 0330 and he wants to go outside.Comment

We have 4 dogs currently.
A mutt that was returned twice to the shelter, no idea how old but got her maybe 9 years ago.
A 8 year old Boston that’s is very playful and over protective ( bit me a couple times in the early morning when I woke up my kid and startled him).
A old overweight beagle that belonged to my dad before he passed, then my grandparents before my grandmother passed and my grandfather couldn’t take care of him. He’s the dog world equivalent of Joe Biden.
Finally a 2 year old Great Pyrenees that’s a giant goof but very protective of everyone in the house.Comment

More than I certainly wanted.
I said no more than 2, which were the mutt and Boston. My son’s friend was murdered and he couldn’t sleep at night. Seen the Pyrenees at the local shelter and got him which really helped my son.
Then my grandmother passed and no one could take that dam beagle, and with how old and overweight he is with being half blind and deaf sending him to a shelter would be a death sentence.
So now I got 4 dogs dammit.
