I'm giving up my Silverado, my son is going to put it to work at his company, I don't use it much anymore since I can't do some things I used to do, but the battery is dead and won't hold a charge, so I took it out and walked into the auto parts place I've been going for the last 40 years. Nice young lady, cute, very attentive, I strike a conversation Tell her about the truck going to my son, I can't really use it anymore and all that stuff, meanwhile she says, the battery just ran out of warranty, let me see what I can do, let me look you up......You have bought a lot of batteries here....OK, I'm going to give you a better one and just pay me $23.00. She saved me $200.

Well done, Sir. Even if she'd have charged you full price, there's never any downside in being kind to other people. It's a wise business move on her part. She knows you're a low-maintenance, paying customer. You'll be back.

I recently returned to an old dentist (a 90 minute drive) after a 5-year absence. The guy recognized me right away. He spotted the source of my pain: a cracked tooth and offered to push back his lunch plans so that he could grind it down and immediately install a temporary filling. When we were finished, he said "Get outta here. We'll take care of the insurance and bill you the remainder just like before."

For me, it's worth a 90-minute drive to do business with someone I know and trust.
