Dog has gone blind from cataracts and she can't hear shit, she's diabetic so cataract surgery is out of the question the vet says. I think we're getting close to saying good bye. This is my last dog, she was my daughter's but after moving out she left her with us and then went and adopted another....ain't that a bitch?

Dogs go by sense of smell and don’t have to see much but it hurts me to see her bumping into furniture once in a while, at least she knows this house well but not the island house, let’s see how she does, we’ll be a few days there next week.Sometimes I wish I had a Harry Potter's wand and make people go up into smoke.Comment

All of our dogs are rescues; animals that nobody else wanted. Sounds like the same thing happened to you, under slightly different circumstances. I doubt you'll be taking any more of your daughter's dogs. I'd be pissed.
Our male airedale terrier is about 13 years old, struggles to stand up, gets confused, but is still happy and pain free. I'm guessing he has another 6 months. Of all the dogs we've had, he was probably the worst pet, but the best guard dog. He showed his bravery when my wife literally almost bumped into a black bear a few years ago. The other 2 dogs were scared. The male airedale was on the bear like white on rice.
Our last cat got into some poison (thanks to our neighbors) in the Fall and has been failing ever since. He's currently just skin and bones. He's in no pain, so we're not putting him down yet. Our other cat lingered for a couple months before he died.
The neighbors didn't purposefully poison our cats. And our cats shouldn't have been over there, so I really don't have a leg to stand on. However.... I busted ass for these people helping with all sorts of "emergencies". Not any more. The last time I saw them, they wanted to know if I could take down a number of large (60') pines down for them. I helped by giving the a number to a tree service.Comment

BTW, just realized, she is not totally blind, she can see some. I was legally blind on the left eye when I had cataracts and still could see some. She was able to catch her favorite ball today and if I move my hand in front of her the eyes move , so she can see some shadows anyhow. 13 years old, going on 14, she's still moving around well. You can get a lot of enjoyment out of your beach house in 10 year's time. It's something you've always wanted. You earned it. Have fun and don't look back.
You're wise not to saddle yourself with too many responsibilities. I agree with your list of "no-goes" except dogs. Dogs have been a part of our "family" from day 1... even on our first date!
I retired early at age 56 and am now 61. My friends thought I was crazy (and still do). They're all working "just one more year". It's not for everyone, but it has been great for me. Surprisingly, I'm busy almost every day, and loving most of it.Comment

I'll have to agree with that. I entering a venue years ago. The lady at the entry table had one of these dogs sitting on the table. I tried to pat it on the head and I narrowly avoided getting bit. The lady thought it was funny. No it's not. I have no use for aggressive dogs. Similar thing on a beach years ago with a big dog. I was just walking by the the thing was growling and threatening. The people were just lost to their dog's behavior "Oh.... it's OK. He won't bite."
Mostly, it's the people; not the dog. I still wouldn't have a mean dog though.Comment
