Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz says former state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in a politically motivated assassination. A second lawmaker and his wife were shot and wounded.

“We must all, in Minnesota and across the country, stand against all forms of political violence," Walz said at a press conference Saturday. “Those responsible for this will be held accountable.”

Vance Luther Boelter, 57, is being sought for his alleged connection with the attack, two sources familiar with the matter told The Associated Press.

Boelter is reportedly the CEO of Red Lion Group, based in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Praetorian Guard Security Services, according to Minnesota Africans United’s website.

Professional Background: Boelter was appointed twice by Governor Tim Walz as a private sector representative to the Governor's Workforce Council (in 2016 under then-Governor Mark Dayton, and again in 2019 under Governor Walz). His term on the board expired in 2023. He also holds a Doctorate in Leadership for the Advancement of Learning and Service, a Master of Science in Management, and an undergraduate degree in International Relations. He is listed as CEO of Red Lion Group in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Praetorian Guard Security Services in Minnesota. He has worked for large companies like Nestle, Del Monte, Tesoro, Marathon Speedway, and 7-Eleven in various roles.
