Volunteered to work an LEO range

I miss the US Army, even the crappy jobs. Long story, but just today I received an offer I couldn't refuse. A large Michigan LEO event is desperate due to last-minute personnel shortages and asked me to work their range. No pay. No travel. I get lodging, food, and a firm handshake. I'm in!

I'll likely be standing in the sun and rain for 10-12 hours a day for the next 3 days as a range safety officer. Frankly; I'm as happy as a clam. Can't wait!

Just got back. As predicted, I had a good time. It was just like being back in the Army for a few days: getting rained on, mediocre food, high temperatures, no-frills barracks lodging, long hours, etc.

I really liked the people I was working with. They were all different types of LEOs. I was the "old Army guy", but the LEO and military cultures were very similar. They were glad to have the extra help. Since I was older than all of them, I made it a point to be the first one to jump to help carry something heavy, pick up brass, get hands dirty, etc... Looks like they want me back next year. If I'm still above ground, I'll be happy to do it.

There was lots of good-natured harassment. We all targeted the State cop who literally sprinted to his car for a raincoat when the rest of us stood stoic getting soaked with the trainees.

A few months back I was talking to an old Army buddy about how much both of us would like to go back in time just to do a few more days of active duty. Guess I got my wish. Amazing how things come together. This opportunity literally fell onto my lap without warning or preparation.

Good for you good Man Johnny.. Sounds like you had fun and met a good bunch of guys.. Merc owes me a few favors so he is going to let me drive his nephews cruiser NYPD a few laps around Times Square with lights and siren. 😁
