Fred thank you so much for putting the picts. up buddy.. We texted them to Fred and he posted them us dummies here in the swamp did not know how to do phone to computer transfer.
Bears bears and more bears here now. Plus all the mommy bears have cubs so its going to get saturated. That's my truck in the front yard the bears come out of the woods across the road. Their are so many sadly their putting out a hunting season. I support hunting 100% but we practically get to know these guys. No I don't go near them or feed them but they walk right up on my porch and stare in the damn window while I am cooking.
Their all fat and have tons of food to eat. My buddy a few miles from me here raised a cub whose mom sadly got killed. She lived on his porch and followed him everywhere he went. A hole neighbor complained and they came and took her to the Pan Handle of Fla.. She would literally eat with him at the picnic table. He was heartbroken..
Population of our town Astor Fl. 1,350 humans. Bears? around a thousand it seems and we all get along just fine.. 😉 -
those little black bears are not so dangerous unless they feel threatened. They could be a pain turning garbage cans over. Hey do you have coyotes there? They have made it to Sanibel somehow. If you have a small pet you need to be careful, if the gators don't get it the coyotes will. Dumb snowbirds walk their little poodle next to the swampy preserve area....Sometimes I wish I had a Harry Potter's wand and make people go up into smoke.Comment

Coyotes yes Fred are here. I have only seen one walking on the side of the road out in the forest. It was rather big and really a beautiful coat of fur. This thing really could have passed for a smaller wolf..Comment

I'se hates coyotes! When I see one I start vibrating inside, wanting to draw and shoot it. Only thing is, this area has grown up so much, there is no safe backstop for the bullet except someone's house or shed. What's a little bullethole compared to those bastard coyotes killing chickens, turkeys, cats, and puppy dogs? If you've ever seen them attacking a cow as she gives birth, you'd probably hate them, too.Comment

We just had a black bear season permit required. I am 100% for hunting but I could not see culling these critters. No hunting near any of our few small towns surrounding the Ocala Nat. Forest. One would not have to be Daniel Boone to pop one as they come to town every day. Baiting was allowed so as not to kill a mother with cubs.
But these critters are super smart as I have not seen one here since season started. My buddy lives way the hell out in the huge forest miles away from anything and he is saturated with them. Their all big and fat no skinny ones so their is plenty of food for them. D.N.R. won't say yet how many were killed but I guess they will soon?
Anti hunt crowd was buying permits so hunters could not get them to I guess save a bear or two? They will be back.Comment

My brother-in-law got a tag for one several years ago, and was successful in his hunt. But, he said he would never hunt one again. It looked too much like a people once skinned and laid out in the back of his pickup. Something went wrong at the meat processor, too. The meat wasn't very good - the dogs wouldn't even eat the bratwursts.Comment

Officials said Tuesday there were 52 bears harvested during the 2025 hunt, which spanned from Dec. 6 to Dec. 28.
The 2025 hunt was approved by the FWC as the black bear population was estimated to be over 4,000

"4,000 thousand bears estimated in Fla." Hell I think their is that many in my yard at night.
Every bear I see here is big and fat their ain't no skinny bears so food is not a problem for them. Monday is trash day for our small neighborhood here so Sunday night they come in from all over and walk the streets lookin for unsecure trash cans to feast on. Their stronger than even Merc. My plastic container is an easy 100lbs. and they put it in their mouth and walk down the driveway with it like it was a kids toy.
Bear meat to me tasted just like meat 'pot roasted' but super greasy. I would cook it over an open fire pit letting the grease run out and its actually pretty good. Bear 14.jpg Polar bear .jpg
Check out the one on the right from way up north somewhere? A polar bear mixed with a grizzly brown. That guy would for sure kick Merc's ass..
