In the 90s, I worked at a Firestone shop doing tires and oil changes. One day, a lady came in and asked if we could take off her tires, flip them around, and remount them on the rims. All of her tires were so bald on the outer edge that the steel belting was exposed. It was a lease she was turning in the next day and she thought she could hide this from inspection upon turn-in. My boss explained to her that they go over lease turn-ins with a fine tooth comb, and they will see her tire wear. He also explained that the inner edge of each tire was also bald, just no metal showing. So no matter what, she will get dinged for the tires. He offered to sell her our cheapest set of new tires (maybe $25 each?), she declined and said she knows what she's doing, just flip them around. She also refused to pay for balancing because she was turning it in tomorrow. After doing the requested work, I had to drive her car to her work and drop it off for her. I was driving on perfectly smooth roads and it felt like I was doing extreme off-roading.
