In the warmer months I like to go on solo canoe and camping adventures. Around here, all we have is black bears and I've never been bothered by one. That said; it's always on my mind. It's the only animal in Michigan that can kill me, and I'd rather not bump into one.

Virtually every other night I have them in my yard walking the street or coming up on my porch begging for food. 90% of them if one desired they could feed them by hand their so used to people. But the other 10%? The young and the big old males or females with cubs. If given the slightest opportunity they will attack.
As Klauus mentioned in this thread the magic word food. Big male poking at my garbage I go out and it stares at me and growls. Whoops enjoy your meal bye.

The way I was always taught to look at it was, humans unarmed are near the bottom of the food chain when it comes to medium sized to large predators. If they are hungry you are on the menu. Period.

Tiny humans are even more vulnerable and essentially defenseless.

In the 5+ years we've lived in rural NW Michigan, I have only caught two brief glimpses of black bears. My wife has had a lot more.
