Perhaps I'm missing something. I don't have a problem with Hegseth. Whenever he visits a base, he wakes up at O-Dark-Thirty and does PT with the troops. He loves the troops but is very tough with flag grade officers. I kinda like that. During my time in the Army, Sec Defs were all old, fat guys who liked to hang out with politicians and powerful flag grades. They shuddered at the thought of socializing with lower enlisted. Hegseth is completely the opposite.

The incident that's causing the stir is possibly ordering a second strike on a couple guys clinging to wreckage out in the sea. If true, this would likely violate the law of war which prohibits attacks on men floating in the water. Once in the water, they are defenseless "non-combatants". There are two arguments that can be made to wiggle out of law of war protocols:

1. You can argue that the men in the water still posed a threat and had the ability to bring harm upon friendly forces. Something as simple as communicating via radio or cell phone could be successfully argued as "passing intelligence information" to enemy forces. If so, they're still in the fight, still combatants and therefore; lawful targets.

2. The Secretary of Defense is a member of the US National Command Authority. By virtue of this position, he is allowed to override any law of war restriction. The US has a long history of not complying with some restrictions. The most famous of which is the US using "dumb" mines along the North/South Korean border. No other country is allowed to do this, but we decided to go our own way. Hegseth is perfectly within his power to thumb his nose at law of war protocols and destroy the troops in the water.

You're right. None of us should care about what happens to "drug cartel mules". By definition; they are UN-lawful combatants. And because they are unlawful combatants, they do not receive the same protections under the Geneva Convention as a lawful combatant would.

The US has always "played nice" with unlawful combatants. We did it in your time: Vietnam and my time: Iraq. We generously gave unlawful combatants the benefit of the doubt and afforded them all the protections and rights of a lawful combatant. Every couple weeks I access my state's sex offender registry and see if there are any new ones near my property. Right now, there are two that are relatively close, but I also check out the ones farther away. I memorize their faces, vehicles, properties, and names. If I see something isn't right, I can report them through the registry.

The thing that's most frustrating to me is how little prison time these guys get. The other thing that pisses me off is their crimes were committed in other counties and after their release from prison, they decide to settle near me. Not the sort of neighbors I want. First I believe they should 'most all' be castrated but research before condemnation.
So my buds son 18 yrs young is going out with a girl a year younger than him 17 not legally of age. Happening all the time all over town. Relationship was for a few years.
