Merc, Jamie is an island girl, tell her to stop the BS...we got more bugs in the islands than....well, maybe not Flarda. LOL You can't go out the door in Sanibel between 7PM and 9 AM without bug spray on you, the noseeums will attack you, Mosquitoes are like small hellicopters hovering over you, Palmetto bugs I haven't seen there yet, I guess the iguanas eat them, I have a nice supply of rabbits in my backyard for the coyotes and foxes to eat. Also a Komodo Dragon or two have been spotted along with our resident salt water crocs.....welcome to Florida's West Coast. Sanibel has been named one of the Best Ten Beaches in the US and the best place in the US to own a second home.
It's so peaceful out here in the country

Too bad about your experiences. Wife and I live on large wooded acreage on water in Michigan. We absolutely love it. That said.... we probably only have another 20 years, so at best, we're just "care-takers", keeping the place nice for the next occupant.I used to live in the country. I still live in the same place but the developers have bought up property around our lake system and cut down almost every fucking tree that they can find. They have also filled in wetlands so that they put 4 houses per acre on it. I can't legally fill in wetlands but the builders can if they purchase wetlands on the other side of the state in some preserve. To me that doesn't make sense because land 90 miles away has nothing to do with the ecology here.
Anyway it was nice the 40 years of country life that lasted for us. 4thIDvet is fortunate because his country property is surrounded by a national forest and it will not change any time soon.
If the worst happened and it all was taken away from us, I think we could be equally happy on some other plot of rural wilderness whether it be desert, woodland, swamp or beach.Comment

Yes RTO 1/2 million acres of Nat. Forest out my front door and 1/4 million out my back. St. Johns river flowing through town here. Pop. 1,500 give or take.I used to live in the country. 95% White 4% Wetbacks sometimes a negro or two. The Wets are o.k. their cool dudes work the fern fields. They make sure the White pot smokers are supplied. Crime? occasional break in but everyone is armed so that is not a big worry. Lots of homeless living in the forest.Comment

Damn that is the worst damn thing in the world they could print for you Fred. "Sanibel read this everyone this place is paradise so come on down retire here you will love it we guarantee." Whoops uh oh..
Mt. Dora Fla. just a bit south of me here. AARP named it one of the top 3 retirement towns for seniors one year. Still kind of nice but everyone and their frigging brother came. It ain't a nice little cobble stone street town overlooking the lake anymore. Prices chased all the nice shops out and a certain element closed in on the town.
Crooked county commissioners $$ and Fed. laws 'section 8'. Bars replaced the quaint little shops and crime is up their right on the edge of town. If yah think it can't happen in Sanibel ask RTO and visit Mt. Dora.

the problem is affording to live there. Renting a cheap 2/2 house is about $4500 minimum per month, buying? get ready to spend close to a million cash or hope to get insurance if you finance and everything you buy in the island is way cheaper outside, just coming through the causeway willl cost you $6.00. $10 per day beach parking if you don't live here. there are state taxes, city taxes, county taxes...but they do send a fleet of choppers spraying for mosquitoes.Sometimes I wish I had a Harry Potter's wand and make people go up into smoke.Comment

Yup I see what yer saying buddy a different set of circumstances. My example Mt. Dora was relatively reasonably priced which probably is what gave it the AARP nomination.
Statistics I always love studying it. With a few simple twists the addition or deletion of time places people events you can change a whole situation to deceive. Politicians use it extensively.Comment

We have a couple friends who went to Mt Dora, they love it there. it's quiet. peaceful. But what am I going to do, even after my wife quits (for the second time) working? we still have too many ties here, our oldest son, is a top guy at the school system here, he's not moving, when he got sick we paid off his place, a beautiful lake front house, he ain't moving, middle son,...well the house was ours too, paid off, owns a large business here, just bought a second home in Marathon with direct exit to the ocean, daughter and is a nurse, husband is an engineer, we gave them a free and clear house to get started, 8 minutes away from us. middle guy and grandkids are 10 minutes away, the other guy 20 minutes.... they all have keys to the Sanibel house and a room there, grandkids can take the sleeper sofa in the den. I've got no other place to go, that's it for me bud. We live in this big old 4 bedroom house here with extra rooms and beds. Your AC broke tonight? Come on over, we've got room for you. I wanted a place in the NC mountains but majority won and Sanibel was a close second choice.Sometimes I wish I had a Harry Potter's wand and make people go up into smoke.Comment
