President Trump just signed it into law yesterday. And some asshole "Army Veteran" just went in front of the White House to burn one and got arrested. He may get a year of free room and board.
It is Now Illegal To Burn an American Flag in American Soil.

I wrote Sen. Byrd a letter regarding this issue years ago. It was the one and only time I actually got a response back, actually from him and not a staffer, hand signed in writing. His argument was also that it was a form of free speech. Didn't like it, but he thought it wrong to ban it as well.Comment

It’s illegal to do a burnout on a gay pride mural painted on a public street
It’s hate speach to burn a rainbow flag
Now it’s against the law to burn an American flag.
I agree that all of these acts should be treated the same under the law, but I disagree with the idea that ANY of them should be illegal.
The right to express yourself includes the right to hurt other people’s feelings and to express dissent with your government. Free speach as long as I agree with what you’re saying isn’t free speech at all.👍 1Comment

Burning your flag should be illegal, yes, and there should be a penalty for it, physical penalty, like getting beat up by a couple of rednecks who had a few beers and are out to have some fun.
Physical damage is not free speech. burning the flag is carrying out an action, not speaking your mind. You have the right to call me whatever you want, you don't have the right to burn my flag. SCOTUS in their liberal minds fucked that one up.Sometimes I wish I had a Harry Potter's wand and make people go up into smoke.👍 1Comment

First off, and I’ve always found this part to be ironic, the prescribed method for retiring a desicrated, worn, or tattered US flag is to either respectfully cut it up or to burn it.
Secondly, a physical act can very much be part of free speech. Art, performance, assembly, we should not be seeking to limit how people express themselves (provided there is no danger or harm to others). Frankly, I don’t even have an issue with self-immolation as a form of political speech. Some nutcase wants to burn themselves alive and has the stones to do it, stand down wind and spark up for all I care.
Freedom is an uncomfortable thing.Comment

You are confusing Physical Display with Physical Action. I can display a sign calling my brother in law an asshole but if I go beat him up to show he is an asshole I can get arrested.
We may have been "trained" into thinking a Physical Action is an act of free speech by the ever present liberal SCOTUS in 1989 when they called it "Symbolic Speech", replacing terms in the English language at their will.
At any rate I'm glad DJT put a stop to it for a while at least and allow for a few assholes to get beat up.

Furthermore: "Notwithstanding the Supreme Court’s rulings on First Amendment protections, the Court has never held that American Flag desecration conducted in a manner that is likely to incite imminent lawless action or that is an action amounting to 'fighting words' is constitutionally protected,"
"Burn at your own risk" shall be the new legal disclosure attached on every US flag sold.Sometimes I wish I had a Harry Potter's wand and make people go up into smoke.Comment
